Bitcoin Q&A: Nonces, mining, and quantum computing

Who generates the nonce? What makes it random? How is nonce-guessing important to the competitive process of mining? What happens if the hashing algorithm (SHA-256) was compromised? Is quantum computing a threat?

These questions are from the MOOC 7.2 and 9.2, which took place on February 26th 2017 and February 23rd 2018 respectively. Andreas is a teaching fellow with the University of Nicosia. The first course in their Master of Science in Digital Currency degree, DFIN-511: Introduction to Digital Currencies, is offered for free as an open enrollment MOOC course to anyone interested in learning about the fundamental principles.

As always, great Video! Where do we go to ask questions? YoutTube, Twitter, or do you have a question submission tool?

When do you make a talk about Elastos ?

  3. How is the 15 billion dollars in bitcoin figure calculated?

  4. The only people who find quantum computing to be exciting are those who have no idea what it really it means.

  5. IF YOU'RE NOT SATOSHI, MY MUM IS A GORILLA

  6. I feel like if someone smart cracked SHA-256, they would use that power to mine blocks at a rate just below what would be considered "suspicious enough" to be detected by the community, for as long as they could get away with it and not tell anyone. Their hash output could just look like a big ASIC farm. No need to kill the golden goose.

  7. What happens when there's no fitting nonce to mine the block?

  8. Awesome as always

  9. Andreas the real mvp we follow you !

Andreas M. Antonopoulos what do you think about EOS?
